New Orleans Saints Announce The Re-Signing Of Veteran Safety Johnathan Abram

The New Orleans Saints announced on Wednesday that they have re-signed veteran S Johnathan Abram. This comes just a day after the team re-signed S Ugo Amadi.

New Orleans released S Marcus Maye just prior to the start of free agency. They also lost reserve defensive back Lonnie Johnson, who agreed to terms with the Houston Texans. Amadi and Abram will rejoin safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Howden on the back end of the defense.

Abram, 27, was originally a first-round choice out of Mississippi State by the Oakland Raiders in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played his first four years with the Raiders, intercepting three passes and breaking up 15 others. He recorded 207 total tackles, which included nine for loss and 125 solo stops.

The Raiders released Abram at mid-season during the 2022 campaign. He was picked up by the Green Bay Packers, where he played three games before finishing the final six contests for the Seattle Seahawks.

New Orleans signed Abram during free agency last offseason. Best as an in-the-box safety, Abram would appear in 35% of the defensive snaps over nine games with the team, starting three contests.

Abram intercepted one pass for the Saints in 2023. He recorded 26 total tackles, including one for loss and 12 solo stops. New Orleans ranked 10th in pass defense last season. They were 13th in total defense and eighth in points allowed.
